What will the course cover?

Relaxation and energising exercises. Short sequences of classical Tai Chi movements An introduction to the Samll Circle Tai Chi form.

Who is the course for?

People over 50 including those who are unused to exercise.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

No skills, knowlegde or experience is required

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Practice a range of relaxing and energising exercises Deomnstrate some understanding of the uses and benefits of the exercises taught Practice some classical Tai Chi movements independently Work towards agreed individual goals By the end of the course most learners can practice the complete Small Circle form when working within a group. Many can do so independently and with confidence. Tai Chi is said to relax the body, calm the mind and lift the spirit. Learners report many and varied benefits which they attribute to regular practice. The most common of these are improved ability to cope with stress, and improved mobility and balance.

How is the course organised?

This course offers an introduction to Tai Chi without pressure to remember a long sequence of movements. The principles of the art are introduced through carefully selected sets of exercises. Classical Tai Chi movements are first learned in their own right and can be adapted to learners' individual needs. Later they are linked in an introduction to the Small Circle form.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

No extra practise is required but 10-15 minutes of Tai Chi is a good habit to get into.

How will my progress be assessed?

Each learner will complete a health questionnaire and an initial assessment from which individual targets/challenges will be set. No formal assessment but your progress will be tracked against the course learning outcomes and your personal targets. Self assessment may also be required.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

You can continue to learn and progress within the same class. you can progress to a level 2 Agewell course if advised to by the tutor. you can practise your exercises and the small circle form independently. try out other Agewell classes or join a mainstream Tai Chi class

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

Normal Agewell costs apply. Please wear loose comfortable clothing and flat, flexible soled shoes that do not restrict ankle movement. Books may be recommended but there is no required reading. You may also be informed about Tai Chi events but will be under no obligation to attend. Please also bring water with you.

What support is available?

Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available from the ALSS course guide and from teaching or reception staff.
