What will the course cover?
The basics of contemporary technique and introduction to dance terms and movement styles. Body and spatial awareness and how to move correctly without causing injury. Exercising the body to improve and strengthen physically. Using the techniques Release, which is all about releasing the tension from the body and moving in harmony, allowing the weight of the body to take you where you are going; and Limon, which involves using the breath to enhance the movement quality.
Who is the course for?
The course is for people who have had little or no experience of contemporary dance and wish to learn and explore their own movement creatively. It is also ideal for students who have some dance experience and wish to practise to keep fit and healthy.
What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?
This course is for complete beginners so there is no level or standard the student should have reached.
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
Learn health & safety on the dance floor Improve posture and alignment Use of breath to facilitate movement Floorwork – understand use of floor as support for movement Co-ordination – the ability to move different parts of the body simultaneously Move with ease and efficiency across the dance floor Small and medium jumps Turns and leans Basic understanding of contemporary release technique Maintain physical fitness, strength, flexibility and cardio respiratory ability Become aware of musicality and response to music Develop confidence in dancing
How is the course organised?
Weekly session with warm ups, excercises, travelling sequences and routine.
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
"It is beneficial if students can practice some of the work outside of class, but this is in no way necessary for taking the course.
How will my progress be assessed?
Tutor observation with verbal feedback in class, and written feedback in your Learning Journal. Each learner will have their own Learning Journal and Individual Learning Plan in which they make notes and reflections to help chart their progress.
What can I expect to go on to after this course?
"Learner can progress to higher level and other dance classes. Tutors will be able to give advice. Learners can also take up other forms of dance offered by Adult education Service and colleges elsewhere.
Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
None. Please note: Appropriate non restrictive clothing should be worn for class e.g.. Jogging pants, leggings, T-shirts, shorts. No jewellery to be worn in class.
What support is available?
Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available in the Guide or from teaching or Reception staff.
