What will the course cover?

This course is run as 3 open workshops. You can either work on a project of your own, with guidance and support from the tutor or, as a beginner, learn some of the basic skills and techniques of woodwork. (Use of machines is at the discretion of the lecturer and is dependent on the students’ experience).

Who is the course for?

People who have an interest in woodwork, either beginners or people with some experience.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

No previous woodwork skills are required, just the ability to follow verbal instruction.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

These Saturdays are very flexible. Depending on what students want, they can include the following: - Identify, select and learn how to use a selection of woodworking hand tools (chisels, saws, marking and mortise gauges, different planes i.e. smoothing, block, plough and rebate planes, etc.) and power tools (router, biscuitjointer, jigsaw, drill, sander, etc.) - Mark out and cut a selection of woodwork joints. - Chisel sharpening. - Hard and soft wood identification. - Planning of projects. Experienced students will be able to extend their knowledge and skills by working on their projects, with guidance and support from the tutor.

How is the course organised?

Group and individual demonstrations and instruction, discussion, project work, set exercises, question and answer sessions.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

If you want to make a project, you will need to do some project development and source materials.

How will my progress be assessed?

Feedback from tutor on project work and progress and recorded in your Individual Learning Plan.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Other woodwork and related courses here at the centre or elsewhere.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

Cost of materials for personal projects. If you want to work on a project, bring wood or a project to work on. (Some practise wood is provided). Pencil, paper, eraser. Apron if desired. Older clothes. Stout shoes.

What support is available?

Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available in the Guide or from teaching or Reception staff.
