What will the course cover?
During this short course you will make a fashionable skirt to a personal fit and ensure a well finished garment. Working from a commercial pattern you will learn how to measure, lay out, cut, tack, use a sewing machine and insert a consealed zip with ease. Once you have enrolled the tutor will contact you by telephone to discuss what you will need to buy to be ready to start the course.

For complete beginners and intermediate students.
What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?
A general interest in fashion and clothes making.
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
Use a commercial pattern. Apply Health and safety procedures to a sewing room. Take accurate measurements using the metric system. Make an accurate lay pattern. Cut fabric accurately. Make accurate and effective tailors tacks. Thread and use a domestic sewing machine. Handle fabrics with necessary care. Insert a concealed zip. Create a Fashionable skirt.
How is the course organised?
Weekly demonstrations. Individual practice supported with handouts. Question and answer sessions.
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
Reading related magazines. Purchasing own fabric.
How will my progress be assessed?
Individual Learning Plan and learning journal. Feed back from tutor.
What can I expect to go on to after this course?
Further clothes making classes both non accredited or City & Guilds awards.
Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
Basic sewing kit, commercial pattern and fabric according to pattern. Please ask for additional details from the reception staff. Note pad and pen. N.B.When you enrol, please make sure that reception has a contact telephone number for you. The tutor will then be able to phone you to give you further information and take your approximate size which is necessary for ordering the patterns. Please DO NOT buy your fabric until after the tutor has called you.
What support is available?
Learner Support Fund – a grant is available to help you pay for the cost of the course and other expenses incurred, if you are a resident in receipt of benefits. You may wish to get additional help offered through Study Support Sessions. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
