What will the course cover?

"You will work on a stained glass panel during which time a range of skills will be taught including: designing cartooning, glass cutting, leading, and soldering. It will also be to possible to explore kiln-fired glass painting techniques, sand blasting and glass fusing."

Who is the course for?

Students who would like to explore the medium of stained glass and develop their art, craft and design skills.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

No prior experience, but practical abilities are required.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

"Demonstrate an understanding of safe studio/workshop practice. Identify and use 5 specialist items of stained glass tools and equipment safely. Translate a simple design or image into an accurate leaded glass pattern. Select and use basic materials including glass and lead cane, appropriate to a design/pattern. Cut glass, cut lead, and assemble a small stained glass item. Those with more experience may be able to etch or sandblast glass to produce a greater variety of surface textures. "

How is the course organised?

"There will be practical demonstrations, formal instruction, practical experience and individual tuition. Occasional illustrated lectures will cover historical and contemporaray stained glass."

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Design work, library and internet research, sketchbook drawings and some practical work such as finishing. Visits to museums and places that contain examples of stained glass are recommended to increase your knowledge.

How will my progress be assessed?

Progress is assessed through discussing the work individually and in groups and also recorded on your Individual Learning Plans and Learning Journals.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Produce work of a high standard that could contribute to a portfolio for submission to enter FE/HE or possibly take commissions for stained glass.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

Some materials and equipment will need to be supplied by the student as advised by the tutor on the first session. Open footwear (e.g. sandals) should not be worn during sessions.

What support is available?

Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available in the Guide or from teaching or Reception staff
