What will the course cover?
This course is aimed at students who have completed at least two years of upholstery. It gives you the opportunity to tackle more advanced techniques and chairs. You will participate in group discussions on approaches, restoration and resolving naturally occurring upholstery problems. Please bring your project to the first class.
Who is the course for?
For students who have completed at least 2 years of upholstery. Bring your project to the 1st class.
What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?
Recognise and use tools and materials. Upholster a drop in seat. Upholster a chair with an upholstered seat and back pad. Use a sewing machine confidently.
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
Work independently on a range of projects. Identify upholstery constructions. Write a programme of work. Write a design brief. Write a costing sheet including time for frame repair. Identify 4 qualities of loose stuffing. Identify 3 suspension systems and specify when each would be used. Apply 3 stitching techniques to create even curves in scrim. Attach buttons to furniture both float and deep. List 5 of the requirements of the Furniture and Furnishings Fire Regulations Act 1988. Apply 3 fabric embellishments. Assess a chair frame for dismantling and re – glueing. Identify 5 product safety regulations relating to furniture and furnishings. Evaluate project completed and techniques used.
How is the course organised?
Practical workshop. Demonstrations. Individual and group work. Question and answer sessions.
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
Keeping folders up to date, with written notes. Providing material for projects. Visits to furniture/fabric retailers.
How will my progress be assessed?
Individual and group feedback from the tutor and through your Learning Journal and Individual Learning Plan.
What can I expect to go on to after this course?
Once you are confident at this level you should be able to start to take commissions or work within the trade or continue onto a higher level course with other provider.
Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
You will need to bring your own piece of furniture and pay for all the materials used. Some tools are provided for use in class. You will need to supply your own top fabric and any trimmings rrequired. Notepad and pen. Camera. Stout shoes.
What support is available?
"Learner Support Fund – a grant is available to help you pay for the cost of the course and other expenses incurred, if you are a resident in receipt of benefits. You may wish to get additional help offered through Study Support Sessions. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities."
