What will the course cover?
Hands on instruction will focus on an introduction to the fundamentals of hand building, including: pinching, coiling, slab building and press moulding. You will also be shown how to apply decorating slips, Majolica, lustres and oxides. Towards the end of the course you will be shown basic wheel based work. This class is designed to accommodate those with little experience or those with some experience who wish to increase or refresh their proficiency and technical skills.
Who is the course for?
This is a mixed ability class, beginners are welcome and those with some or more experience will be encouraged to develop their skills by trying out new techniques.
What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You will need to be able to read a range of written materials and write short pieces of text. You should also be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
Be able to demonstrate hand building skills such as: coiling, pinching and slabbing, press moulding and basic wheel based work. Explore a range of decorative techniques such as Majolica, Slip decoration and oxides, enabling you to translate ideas and designs into 3 dimensional forms using at least one of the construction techniques taught. Plan and work independently. Use a journal/ sketchbook. Record and develop own design from a range of sources. Identify stages required to achieve finished design Create a body of ceramic work which fulfils a personal approach to the given projects. Identify personal strengths and weaknesses and areas for development. Demonstrate an understanding of Health & Safety criteria as applied in a pottery.
How is the course organised?
Demonstrations of a range of advanced techniques. Individual practical activity. Individual guidance. Group and individual discussion.
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
You will be expected to research information for projects and to keep notes and sketches to support your 3D work. The use of a digital camera to record work in progress would be beneficial.
How will my progress be assessed?
Progress is assessed through discussing the work individually and in groups and recorded in your own Individual Learning Plan and Learning Journal.
What can I expect to go on to after this course?
Continue this course to develop your skills further or move on to a higher level course. Please ask your tutor for advice. All learners will have the opportunity to showcase work made in an end of year exhibition.
Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
Clay is charged per pound of clay to cover materials and firing costs. It may be useful to bring your own drawing materials and paint brushes.
What support is available?
Learner Support Fund – a grant is available to help you pay for the cost of the course and other expenses incurred, if you are a resident in receipt of benefits. You may wish to get additional help offered through Study Support Sessions. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
