What will the course cover?

You will learn to handle, mix, control and apply oil paints using various mixing mediums, papers and boards. Painting technique and styles will be developed through studies in tone and colour using brushes and knives.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

Some drawing or painting experience would be beneficial.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Use a variety of drawing materials.

How is the course organised?

Practical drawing and painting sessions. One to one and group tuition. Demonstrations, examples, discussions, talks and question/answer sessions.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

This is voluntary but gallery visits, art books, and websites will enhance practical learning, as will sketch book practice.

How will my progress be assessed?

Evaluation of work produced in weekly reviews and critiques. Classroom and other exhibitions. Your Individual Learning Plan and Learning Journal will be used to record assessment and progress.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Develop your skills further by attending other art courses with us or other providers. The work produced can be used to help build your portfolio for application to FE or HE.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

"Specialist materials e.g. oil paint, and occasional model costs as advised by the tutor. Please note, this will be kept to a minimum. Protective overalls are adviseable. "

What support is available?

"Learner Support Fund – a grant is available to help you pay for the cost of the course and other expenses incurred, if you are a resident in receipt of benefits. You may wish to get additional help offered through Study Support Sessions. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities."
