What will the course cover?

If you are a beginner you will acquire basic woodwork skills and techniques before embarking on your own personal project. More experienced students can extend their knowledge and skills whilst working on a project from the start. Using a variety of joints and construction methods, hand and power tools and machines, you will produce and execute your own design. Use of machines is at the discretion of the lecturer and is dependent on the students’ experience.

Who is the course for?

Serious woodworkers with a commitment to excellence, particularly those wishing to pursue a professional career in cabinet making. The course aims to increase the range and level of expertise of all students through a series of practical projects which encourage students to develop their own design concepts. Primarily practical in aspect, the course also includes a strong element of theory and design relevant to modern furniture making.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

Some prior experience of woodworking (use of hand tools such as saws, chisels etc.) will be an advantage, though not strictly essential. More importantly, students will need enthusiasm and passion for this uniquely satisfying craft.No previous woodwork skills required, ability to follow verbal instructions.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

You will also be able to: Handle timber, man made boards, adhesives and finishing materials correctly to Health and Safety standards. Use hand and power tools accurately and safely. Describe 2 different wood seasoning techniques. Create a design brief for each project. Apply colour theory and basic design principles to 3 projects. Produce workshop drawings for 3 pieces of cabinet furniture. Demonstrate the ability to apply Health and Safety procedures in a woodwork shop. Prepare wood from sawn to receive a finish. Plane a piece of timber square. Cut complex shapes from timber. Produce joints: mitre lap, corner bridle finger and dovetail joints, mortise and tenon joint, butt joint (dowel or biscuit) housing, rebating. Attach ironmongery - hinge, catch, stay as required – hinge and metal screw. Apply veneer by hand. Apply wood finishes to projects. Evaluate projects completed.

How is the course organised?

"A series of lectures, demonstrations and workshop practices. Termly tutorials. Group and individual demonstration and instruction, discussion, project work, set exercises, question and answer sessions."

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

"Reading of key text books, visits to important galleries and collections. Homework of design sketches and technical drawing which will form the basis of a folder of notes supporting the practical work. "

How will my progress be assessed?

Feed back from tutor on project work and progress and recorded in your Individual Learning Plan and Learning Journal.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Work in cabinet making workshops or further study at either HND or Degree level

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

"Cost of materials for personal project. Pencil and paper. Apron if desired. Older clothes. Stout shoes. "

What support is available?

Help with literacy and numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available in the Guide or from teaching or Reception staff.
