What will the course cover?

This all day course (5 hours) will cover the tools needed, the practical techniques and the theory of this essential joint.

Who is the course for?

Anyone who is interested in learning or developing their woodwork skills.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

Whilst this may seem an ambitious undertaking it is, we believe, a perfectly possible objective given an appropriate level of concentration and application.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

"The day will begin with the basic hand skills of sawing and chisel work. A series of graded technical exercises will create and develop the necessary foundation with which to complete the joint. This combination of skills and knowledge will then be applied to the marking out and cutting of dovetails-both through and stopped dovetails may be attempted, dependant on student progress. At any rate, the course will afford each student more than enough time to really get to grips in a thorough and detailed manner with this most satisfying aspect of woodwork. "

How is the course organised?

Demonstrations, talks and practical work together with a one day workshop.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

None, as this is a one day course.

How will my progress be assessed?

We provide an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to record your progress and to give you the opportunity to feedback upon what you have learned.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

The next step will be an overview of the theory of the dovetail joint-both the "how?" and "why?" it takes the particular form it does. You can go on to take a longer course in furniture or cabinet making to develop your skills

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

"Older clothes, apron if desired, stout shoes. Notebook and pen. Camera. The wood for samples will be provided. "

What support is available?

Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available in the Guide or from teaching or Reception staff.
