What will the course cover?

This course provides the know-how and skills to tackle many of the day to day problems that occur in any home. In five weeks, you will be able to do basic plumbing, learn how to tile both wall and floor and replace broken tiles.

Who is the course for?

People who wish to learn the basics in DIY.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

An interest in DIY.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

• Approach DIY jobs confidently • Assess whether a task is within your knowledge and capabilities • Apply Health and Safety procedures to DIY jobs • Employing contractors with confidence • Replace taps, washers and ball valves • Change WC • Identify how to unblock pipes • Cut tiles • Apply and place tiles • Grout tiles

How is the course organised?

Weekly topics, demonstrations, talks & practical. Question and answer sessions.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Looking at home maintenance issues, locating stop cocks and related items in your home. Visits to DIY stores to become familiar with products required.

How will my progress be assessed?

Question and answer sessions to check understanding and through the use of your own Individual Learning Plan (ILP).

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

General home improvements or any related course within the adult education service.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

Cost of materials for personal project. Pencil and paper. Apron if desired. Older clothes. Stout shoes.

What support is available?

Learner Support Fund – a grant is available to help you pay for the cost of the course and other expenses incurred, if you are a resident in receipt of benefits. You may wish to get additional help offered through Study Support Sessions. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
