What will the course cover?

Introductory projects to give learners a wide range of experience in drawing and painting techniques and materials. This is a fully inclusive class which means that everyone is welcome and is ideal for people with learning and other disabilities and mainstream students who have little or no experience and want to work at a slower pace.

Who is the course for?

This is a fully inclusive class which means that everyone is welcome and is ideal for people with learning and other disabilities and mainstream students who have little or no experience and want to work at a slower pace. You can develop your skills further by enrolling for more than one term.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

No previous experience is necessary. The course is designed for beginners.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Make simple drawings in using line. Demonstrate proportion in simple compositions. Make simple line drawings using pencil and charcoal. Produce work demonstrating the use of tone in chalks or pastels. Use collage to produce artwork. Use line and tone to suggest solid form. Use waterbased colours in simple paintings. Identify the colour wheel and mix colour. Demonstrate the use of primary, secondary and tertiary colours in small paintings.

How is the course organised?

Practical workshop sessions with help from the tutor, in which a range of work will be produced throughout the course. You will also be able to work on your own, and to contribute to group discussion.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Using your sketchbook. Gallery visits if possible.

How will my progress be assessed?

One to one verbal feedback, group discussion and evaluation and written progress recorded on your own Individual Learning Plan and Learning Journal.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Higher level courses in drawing/painting/life-drawing, or other visual art courses.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

Cartridge paper and charcoal are available to buy at a nominal cost. Students should provide their own fixative, masking tape, sketch books and additional drawing materials as necessary.

What support is available?

Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available in the Guide or from teaching or Reception staff.
