What will the course cover?

The course will cover the key skills and knowledge you need to get started on a career supporting learners and teachers in schools

Who is the course for?

This is a knowledge based qualification; it can be taken by learners not yet employed in a school, as well as providing initial training/induction for those new in post. It'ssuitable for learners aged 16 and above.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

Entry onto the course is subject to completion of application form, interview and skills assessment. Evidence of literacy and numeracy skills at Level 1 An appropriate level of IT skills is also required (MS Word, etc.)

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

The qualifications covers a wide variety of areas and you will study the following: CHILD AND YOUNG PERSON DEVELOPMENT SAFEGUARDING THE WELFARE OF CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE COMMUNICATION AND PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH CHILDREN, YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULTS EQUALITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION IN WORK WITH CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE SCHOOLS AS ORGANISATIONS

How is the course organised?

Classroom teaching. One-to-one tutorials as required

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

To gain the maximum benefit, you should read recommended books and websites, and practice the skills covered during the class each week – the more you practice, the faster your skills will improve. Computer access is available at Study Support sessions at Macbeth centre. Candidates will be expected to undertake additional study in their own time and complete assignments including a Learning Journal. Learners will be expected to find their own placement.

How will my progress be assessed?

Portfolio, Feedback and Marked assignments including ongoing self-assessment (Learning Journal). You will have to complete all externally set assignments which will be internally marked and verified

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

You can work towards a Level 2 Certificate qualification in supporting teaching and learning in schools or gain some work experience or complement this qualification with another from the care department

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

2x ring binders (one for portfolio and one for your handouts / research / notes), materials for assignments. Books from reading list.

What support is available?

You may wish to get additional help and guidance offered through the Study Support Sessions at the Macbeth Centre. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. The Learner Support Fund is a discretionary scheme funded by the Adult Learning and Skills Service and the Skills Funding Agency to assist learners who may be experiencing difficulties in paying for course fees, essential equipment/materials or other necessary related expenses. The fund is open to all learners who are in receipt of an income related benefit or those learners who are on a low income. Details of all available support can be found on our website (hfals.co.uk), in the Guide and the Student handbook, or from teaching or Reception staff. There will be tutorials for each student per term
