Course Information Sheet

InDesign

What will the course cover?

Students will learn to use Adobe Indesign to Create and Modify High Quality Documents such as Brochures, Newsletters or Magazines.

Who is the course for?

This Adobe InDesign course is for new users who have little or no experience in Desktop Publishing.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

‘Introduction to Computing' course or previous basic computer software knowledge such as using the Windows Operating system and environment. No previous experience of Adobe InDesign necessary.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Navigate the Adobe InDesign environment; Create Basic Documents; Create Multi-Page Documents; Set up Master Pages; Format Paragraphs; Modify Text Frames; Modify and Group Items; Modify Layers; Modify Graphics; Output Documents and Prepare Documents for Print.

How is the course organised?

Group and individual instruction. Explanations, tasks, demonstrations, discussions, and lots of hands on practise.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

To gain the maximum benefit, you should read recommended books and websites, and practice the topics covered during the class each week – the more you practice, the faster your skills will improve. You should try and spend at least an hour per week of revision and putting the skills learned in the classroom into practice.. Computer access is available at Study Support sessions at Macbeth centre, or at your local library.

How will my progress be assessed?

Informal feedback but classroom tasks will help you decide what else you need to learn or practise. Your tutor may provide homework or tasks to help you track your own progress.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

A course on a different subject, further study of other Desktop Publishing packages, such as Publisher or Illustrator, or take a Photoshop or Digital Artist course to learn to work with images.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

You should bring a pen and notebook, a file folder to store handouts, and a USB key if you want to take your work home with you (your tutor can give you advice on purchasing USB keys). Although a free book is provided for the course, you may benefit from investing in a guide book to supplement your learning. Some suggested texts are: Adobe InDesign CS5 Classroom in a Book (ISBN 0321701798) Brilliant InDesign CS5 - Steve Johnson (ISBN 0273740652) If you are comfortable using the Internet, there are some helpful online sites: vector.tutsplus.com /www.blog.spoongraphics.co.uk/articles/tutorial-roundup-for-getting-started-with-indesign

What support is available?

You may wish to get additional help and guidance offered through the Study Support Sessions at the Macbeth Centre. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. The Learner Support Fund is a discretionary scheme funded by the Adult Learning and Skills Service and the Skills Funding Agency to assist learners who may be experiencing difficulties in paying for course fees, essential equipment/materials or other necessary related expenses. The fund is open to all learners who are in receipt of an income related benefit or those learners who are on a low income. Details of all available support can be found on our website (hfals.co.uk), in the Guide and the Student handbook, or from teaching or Reception staff.
