Motor Vehicle Tasters
What will the course cover?
The practical content includes engine theory, suspension and front wheel steering geometry, the removal, inspection and replacement of brake system components. The cooling system and associated components, tyre removal and replacement, wheel balancing and engine diagnostics and fault finding. Vehicle servicing will also be covered.
Who is the course for?
School students who wish to gain a basic understanding of automotive theory and practical experience of what the motor trade is like as a career.
What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?
None, just a keen interest in motor vehicle technology, with a view to getting work in the motor vehicle industry.
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
Apply Health and safety procedures in a motor vehicle workshop. Build up a folder of evidence Change engine oil and filter Change a tyre on a road wheel. Remove/refit at tyre to a wheel Balance a roadwheel Remove, inspect and replace brake components such as pads, shoes, discs and drums. Describe the differences between electrical and electronic systems. Check and adjust front wheel tracking. Carry out engine diagnostics on a vehicle. State 10 requirements for The MOT test.
How is the course organised?
The course is a mixture of classroom based theory inputs, group work, discussions, demonstration of practical tasks, individual practical tasks. Question and answer sessions.
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
Visits to libraries and subject related websites Reading of class handouts. Reading related magazines such as : car mechanics, auto express, what car and used car buyer. Visit car related shows or exhibitions whenever possible
How will my progress be assessed?
Verbal feedback from tutor. ‘Record of progress’ sheets. Individual Learning Plan.
What can I expect to go on to after this course?
City and Guilds Entry Level 3 Car Maintenance Course City and Guilds 4101 level 1 automotive maintenance and repair.
Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
It is a Free Course Students will be expected to supply boots and overalls. Stout leather shoes and old street clothes are acceptable. Trainers, soft shoes and/or flip flops are not suitable. Note pad and pen.
What support is available?
Help with literacy and numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available in the Learner handbook, from teaching staff or from the reception.
