What will the course cover?

This is a nationally recognized initial training course for people who want to work in childcare. This qualification shows that you have good ability, knowledge and understanding to perform various well defined tasks, with some direction and guidance. The course is designed for learners wanting to become Childcare practitioners.

Who is the course for?

" Those who want to work towards becoming qualified childcare practitioners. Those working in supervised roles with children in care settings. 16-18 year olds interested in training to become child care practitioners. "

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

"Level 1 Literacy skills. As well as being able to write coherently, you will need to demonstrate an ability to develop and mature sufficiently to benefit and learn from working experience. Childcare experience, either paid or voluntary "

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

You will gain general knowledge of the physical care and development of the child which will be assessed through assignment writing ,research and demonstration of competence. Describe, discuss, explain and give examples of: Aspects of working with young children The emotional and social development of young children Attain competencies in: Preparing for employment with young children Working with parents, children and as part of a team Devising practical play activities

How is the course organised?

"Classroom teaching 1-1 tutorials and group tutorials Practical experience through placement in a child care setting. "

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

To attend your placement regularly Attend First Aid training Complete homework and assignments on time

How will my progress be assessed?

"For each unit taught you will be given externally set assignments which will be marked and internally moderated. Tutor feedback Placement assessment "

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

"Work as an assistant in a child care setting. Further training- Child Care Level 3 Diploma in Children’s and Young People’s Workforce "

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

"Apart for the registration and course fees you will require a CRB disclosure certificate which you must have for working with children. We can process this for you for a cost of £44.00 You will be required to pay for your First Aid Training You should provide all the stationary required such as a lever arch file, pens, pencils, paper , apron and scissors. "

What support is available?

ou may wish to get additional help and guidance offered through the Study Support Sessions at the Macbeth Centre. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. The Learner Support Fund is a discretionary scheme funded by the Adult Learning and Skills Service and the Skills Funding Agency to assist learners who may be experiencing difficulties in paying for course fees, essential equipment/materials or other necessary related expenses. The fund is open to all learners who are in receipt of an income related benefit or those learners who are on a low income. Details of all available support can be found on our website (hfals.co.uk), in the Guide and the Student handbook, or from teaching or Reception staff.
