Family Sewing EYFS @ MASBRO CENTRE    

What will the course cover?

We will make samples to develop skills and to prepare you for making a simple sleeveless blouse. We also look at cutting, making up garments and what to look for in a good design considering colour, line and texture also H&S and costings

Who is the course for?

For learners with an interest in the practice of sewing who want to learn new skills, or who want to expand their knowledge and experience in the area of sewing and clothes making.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

A little experience in machine sewing is a plus coupled with with an interest in fashion and textiles.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Produce samples of different seam finishes – plain open seams, double top stitched seam, machine edged seam and a French seam. Produce a sample dart. Make a plain hem and a machine top stitched hem. Experiment with a variety of threads, needles and tensions to achieve correct stitch sizes and tensions for a variety of practical tasks worked on chosen, suitable fabric Make and attach, to sample quarter necklines(CF Shoulder),a neck- facing and a bias strip, suitable for a neck edge finish. Sample and choose a seam/seams and neatening methods suitable for the selected weight fabric and the required methods of fastening – buttons, loops. Use a simple style of a sleeveless blouse pattern, check and adjust measurements as necessary. Produce an economical lay and cut out the garment. Baste, fit and adjust the garment as required during the making process Use pressing equipment to press samples and the garment correctly without marking the surface of the fabric.

How is the course organised?

Individual and group tuition - each student working on their projects or samples. Learners will be expected to keep their own folders of samples, costings, etc. Question and answer sessions. "

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

You will need to buy your fabric. Research in books and magazines for sewing techniques, examining clothes to see how they are made and a visit to V&A costume court will all help you develop your learning.

How will my progress be assessed?

Continuous assessment will occur in class and an Individual Learning Plan will be used to monitor progress and give feedback between learner and tutor. Your work will be assessed by your tutor and sampled by both Internal and External Verifiers. On completion your work will be graded with Pass, Merit or Distinction. If continuing and progressing on to the City & Guilds level 1.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Further classes increasing skills or maybe pattern cutting or higher level accredited courses.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

Please bring a basic sewing kit and an A4 folder with paper and pencil or pen to the first class. Fabrics will need to be sourced as well following advice from your tutor.

What support is available?

Learner Support Fund – a grant is available to help you pay for the cost of the course and other expenses incurred, if you are a resident in receipt of benefits. You may wish to get additional help offered through Study Support Sessions. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
