What will the course cover?
"In this course you will further develop your photographic techniques including the use of lenses, composition, lighting - photoflood/tungsten and flash to produce interesting still-life’s, close-up /macro photography and high quality portraits. The compellation of your images into a portfolio. Students will critically examine photographic issues and trends."
Who is the course for?
For the more experienced photographer who wants to be pushed to a higher level.
What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?
"You should know the fundamental workings of your camera, have an understanding of lenses and when to use a specific lens for a particular situation and be able to download images to a computer. An SLR camera is recomended although a hybrid camera may well suffice for this course."
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
Explain to a high degree how camera settings affect results and to be able to select controls with appropriate speed for the photographic task. Illustrate a variety of themes through a series of photographs which show evidence of the use of the camera, film/digital media and context. Control natural/artificial light more effectivly to produce more interesting and natural looking images. Recognise and produce images with high level of compositional skills. Assess photographs in relation to technical and creative results and suggest improvements.
How is the course organised?
In the classroom - group work and individual work. Outside shoots, group visit to an exhibition and talks with images and dvd.
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
Practicing taking photos to help understand the techniques, project work, visiting photographic exhibitions, reading photography books to build up a workbook.
How will my progress be assessed?
Continual assessment and written feedback through your Individual Learning Plan.
What can I expect to go on to after this course?
Build a portfolio to use for possible entry to higher level course in FE or HE.
Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
Film and processing where necessary. Printing costs. Exhibition visit/s.
What support is available?
Learner Support Fund – a grant is available to help you pay for the cost of the course and other expenses incurred, if you are a resident in receipt of benefits. You may wish to get additional help offered through Study Support Sessions. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
