What will the course cover?
This course will cover decorating a cake ready for a celebration. Please ensure you read the information about what to bring to the first session.
Who is the course for?
Learners who want to learn new skills in the subject for employment and/or personal development and those who are interested just for fun.
What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?
No previous experience is necessary for this course. You can learn from scratch or develop and hone skills you already have.
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
Recognise and make use of sugar craft tools and equipment Select the correct size of board to suit the cake Marzipan your cake Sugar paste your cake and board Demonstrate basic piping using royal icing Simple modeling and lettering make sugar flowers and leaves (tutor's choice) Assemble your cake for presentation You may also develop your own design with help and advice from the tutor. Advice is also given on use of equipment, tools and materials, plus helpful recipes
How is the course organised?
There will be a demonstration of a technique/method/skill to the whole group and individual attention is then given to each student with advice and help as necessary. It is essential that all learners arrive on time.
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
It will be necessary to work on your design outside class during week 5. However, this is not compulsory and if you dont have time, your design can be adapted.
How will my progress be assessed?
Your progress will be assessed by using you Individual Learning Plan (ILP). Tutor and self evaluation. Question and answer sessions.
What can I expect to go on to after this course?
To increase your skills further enrol for the ' Cake decoration and sugar craft - moving on' course and/or attend Saturday or C&G courses.
Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
On your first evening you will need to bring the following: 8 ROUND RICH FRUIT CAKE (e mail tutor for recipe if you need one: juliafrancesfrancis@hotmail.com) 11 round drum* 11 box* 1kg white/natural marzipan Smoother* Spacers* Small cranked palette knife* Small qty icing sugar Jar apricot jam boiled and strained to remove fruit Small spirit level* (for food use only) Tape measure Pizza wheel cutter/optional ALL ITEMS MARKED * ARE AVAILABLE TO BUY FROM TUTOR on the night!
What support is available?
Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available in the Guide or from teaching or Reception staff.
