What will the course cover?
This course will cover making several fine wired sugar flowers and making them into corsages. This will involve making flower paste -which wires and cutters to use for each flower also how to tape and form sprays or flowers for cakes.
Who is the course for?
Learners who wish to increase their skills in the subject for employment and/or personal development and those who are interested just for fun.
What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?
None but an interest in the subject and a willingness to learn. You will need to record your work in photographs and write out simple costings and other related information.
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
Store petal paste to preserve its working consistency Use cutters, templates and formers to create floral components; petals and leaves Texture and soften petal paste surfaces Manipulate fabric ribbons to make tails and loops Use simple taping and wiring techniques Manage drying processes to prevent warping and cracking Use colouring techniques with food safe materials Assemble, tape and fix the wired floral components Position the wired flowers and foliage into a secure and visually balanced corsage
How is the course organised?
"Each week there will be a demonstration of technique/method/skill Learners will practise what is demonstrated. Tutor will pick up on any difficulties experienced."
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
"Learners who practice the skills and techniques taught may progress at a faster rate as well as enabling the tutor to pick up on any difficulties experienced. You will need to source some ingredients and there may be some folder work to complete out of class if necessary."
How will my progress be assessed?
Your progress will be assessed by using your individual Learning Plan (ILP) and folder. Your work will be assessed by your tutor and if you opt to take the C&G qualification may be sampled by internal and external verifiers. Questions and answer sessions. Photographs taken as you progress
What can I expect to go on to after this course?
Begin to work in the business or for yourself or take further courses at this level or higher level course with us or a FE college (tutor can advise).
Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
"The tutor will advise learners about the “tools of the trade” you will be advised each week of what you need to bring. You will need to bring an A4 ring-binder to keep hand-outs and notes and photographs, this is something you can refer to when not in class. n.b. If you choose to take the C&G qualification there is a £36.00 registration fee."
What support is available?
Learner Support Fund – a grant is available to help you pay for the cost of the course and other expenses incurred, if you are a resident in receipt of benefits. You may wish to get additional help offered through Study Support Sessions. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
