What will the course cover?
In this class the aim is to use methods of drawing and painting to make a successful likeness and select methods that bring out the personality of the sitter. A visit to the National Portrait Gallery will be included as part of the course following consulation with the class.
Who is the course for?
All people who wish to develop their drawing skills from observation of the human face and body to develop and improve their drawing skills and to make a good likeness and description of the subject.
What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?
Some experience would be helpful, though not essential. Enthusiasm is important, as is the willingness to achieve your own learning goals.
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
Make drawings of the figure from direct observation. Have some awareness of how the human form is structured. Identify human proportion and show this in life drawings. Demonstrate the ability to analyse the geometry of the figure. Use a variety of drawing materials. Recognise anatomical relationships, and points of articulation (joints, elbows, knees etc.).
How is the course organised?
Practical sessions. Learners will be invited to furthur investigate the subject through exercises given in each lesson to explore the discipline in a number of ways. Discussion and group discussion of outcome and achievements.
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
Gallery and museum visits are recommended as are looking at art books in libraries and visiting websites. Drawing practise is advised.
How will my progress be assessed?
One to one verbal feedback, group discussion and evaluation, written progress and assessment will be recorded on your Individual Learning Plan and in your Learning Journal. Also discussion of each project and its relevance. At the end of term we will evaluate each learner’s work as a whole and discuss individual development.
What can I expect to go on to after this course?
Develop your skills further by attending other art courses with us or other providers. The work produced can be used to help build your portfolio for application to FE or HE.
Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
Some cartridge paper, pencils and charcoal are available to use in class. Learners should provide their own fixative, masking tape, sketch books and additional materials they may wish to work with. You will be able to ask your tutor to advise you on what to buy.
What support is available?
Learner Support Fund – a grant is available to help you pay for the cost of the course and other expenses incurred, if you are a resident in receipt of benefits. You may wish to get additional help offered through Study Support Sessions. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
