What will the course cover?

Papers, pigments, colour mixing, exploring the techniques of watercolour e.g. washes, bleeding, drying times, wet on wet, opaque colour, graduated fades, water to pigment ratios, drawing and observational skills.

Who is the course for?

This course is open to all who are interested in the subject; some drawing experience would be beneficial.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

None but some previous experience of an art based subject would be useful.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Demonstrate good drawing and observational skills. Demonstrate the control and flow of watercolour application. Demonstrate transparent washes and overlays. Recognise the importance of drying times and maintaining hard edges.. See and record comparative tonal values. Use colours informed by colour theory, and show how local colour becomes tonal when affected by light and shade. Develop your touch and handling to be in sympathy with form and content. Demonstrate a range of watercolour painting techniques, bleeding, graduated fades, wet into wet, washes and overlays. Demonstrate the ability to let the water do some of the work. Deconstruct and transcribe painting by watercolour masters. Draw directly with the paint (not just filling in areas).

How is the course organised?

Whole class talks covering resource materials, methods and examples. Practical work with individual discussion. Practical activities. Formal and informal discussion and feedback during the class.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Search out resource material, keep a colour notebook, prepare paper and sketches, stretch paper.

How will my progress be assessed?

One to one and group feedback sessions. Your progress will be charted by both you and the tutor using your Individual Learning Plan and Learning Journal.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Use your work to contribute to your portfolio which you may use to apply to higher level courses in adult, further or higher education. Work independently for pleasure. Use knowledge of colour mixing for other art disciplines e.g. interior design and fashion design, architecture.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

There will be a minimum charge for water colour paper and drawing materials. You will need to bring your own paints and brushes although we have a limited supply for those who have none.

What support is available?

Learner Support Fund – a grant is available to help you pay for the cost of the course and other expenses incurred, if you are a resident in receipt of benefits. You may wish to get additional help offered through Study Support Sessions. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
