Meditation - a day of exploration    

What will the course cover?

The course is an introduction to the basic theory and practice of meditation. It includes traditional techniques for relaxing the body, stilling the mind and developing a more peaceful and positive outlook on life. Meditation has been proven to reduce the harmful effects of stress and improve general health and well being. Students will be encouraged to select and develop a regular practice and may return for further instruction on future courses

Who is the course for?

All are welcome. Students are reminded that the results achieved are directly linked to their commitment to regular practice.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

You will need to be able to sit still for periods of up to twenty minutes or more. Chairs, mats and blocks are provided for comfort. Some practices will be done lying down and we will include walking meditation methods where possible.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

By the end of the course you should be able to: Select a meditation method for regular daily practice from the following: • Mindful meditation. • Inner silence meditation. • Maitri Bhavana. • Walking meditation. Carry out relaxation techniques for unwinding at the end of the day. Develop lung capacity for increased vitality. Carry out specific breathing techniques to calm the mind.

How is the course organised?

The course is run as a one day workshop with options to return on future courses.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Students are reminded that the results achieved are directly linked to their commitment to regular practice.

How will my progress be assessed?

Self assessment is encouraged and there will be ample opportunity to discuss difficulties throughout the day.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Further workshops will take place throughout the year and returning students will be encouraged to work at their own level.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

Chairs, mats and blocks are provided. Wear loose, comfortable clothing made from natural fibres so that your skin can breathe. You may like to bring a cushion and a blanket for comfort.

What support is available?

hroughout the day the teacher will be available to help and advise. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Open Learning is available at Macbeth and WIN.
