What will the course cover?

You will make studies from still-life to develop your skills of composition, draughtsmanship and modelling. We will also investigate the work of well known artists to inform the work produced.

Who is the course for?

All people who wish to develop their drawing skills from observation of still life settings.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

Some experience would be helpful, though not essential. Enthusiasm is very important, as is the willingness to achieve your own learning goals

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Produce a series of drawings and simple paintings using at least 3 different media. Recognise the correct tonal values and their relationships in still-life arrangements. Illustrate a clear understanding of proportions in drawings and paintings produced, using measurement as a tool to train the eye. Use horizontals and verticals to estimate angles and negative spaces. Specify the various styles of making images from the work of 3 artists and at least 3 different periods of history. Use colour theory to understand colour mixing, placing and matching Use the principals of structural composition Make a range of drawings and simple paintings which clearly express form and shape.

How is the course organised?

Practical sessions. Students will be invited to furthur investigate the subject through exercises given in each lesson on different elements of drawing and drawing materials. Discussion and group discussion of outcome and achievements.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Gallery and museum visits are recommended as are looking at art books in libraries and visiting websites. Drawing practise is advised.

How will my progress be assessed?

One to one verbal feedback, group discussion and evaluation, written progress and assessment will be recorded on your Individual Learning Plan and in your Learning Journal. Also discussion of each project and its relevance. At the end of term we will evaluate each learner’s work as a whole and discuss individual development

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Continue with this course or go on to life drawing or painting courses. You could use the work created to help compile a portfolio to help with an application to FE or HE

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

Cartridge paper, pencils and charcoal are provided at nominal cost. Students should provide their own fixative, masking tape, sketch books and additional materials they may wish to work with. You will be able to ask your tutor to advise you on what to buy.

What support is available?

Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available in the Guide or from teaching or Reception staff.
