Arabic Beginners Stage 2   

What will the course cover?

We will review and practice previously learned topics; and you will build up more conversational skills so you can exchange information about yourself and others with a native speaker. You'll work on requesting goods and services in a simple but acceptable way. More numbers, the time and everyday activities, Parts of the body and common illnesses; ask for and pay for items when shopping; prices; ordering drinks and snacks or a meal in a café or restaurant. Further written practice. Grammar: more on verbs including negatives; some prepositions.

Who is the course for?

Those who wish to acquire a practical working knowledge of the language. PLEASE NOTE: THIS COURSE ISN'T FOR TOTAL BEGINNERS!

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

You need to understand and say: greetings, introductions and personal information; some numbers; show knowledge of very basic notions of grammar (singular nouns, adjectives, pronouns, prepositions and some common singular/dual present and future verbs).

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

"• Master basic grammar: a) Nominal sentence and verbal sentence (Dual masculine and feminine) b) Pronouns (Dual Personal, possessives and demonstratives) b) Prepositions, adverbs and adjectives (Dual masculine and feminine) c) Negation of verbs • Read and say the time and describe the routine of daily life • Name the parts of the body • Identify the colours • Change currency and be familiar with working with ours • You will be able to go shopping in post office, food markets and clothes stores • Eat out and order a snack or a meal ( expressing your likes and dislikes) • Describe some common illnessses and symptoms and order medicine from the pharmacy • Recognise and read more public signs "

How is the course organised?

We use the course book, handouts, worksheets; audio and videotapes, 'realia'. You will be encouraged to speak as much as possible in class, to work in small groups and pairs, to take an active part in your learning; and each lesson, to work on the four skills: listening (and understanding), speaking, reading and writing.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Reviewing and learning (by heart, if possible) what has been done in the class. Preparing for your next class (homework will be set). For best results, try hard to spend 15 minutes everyday doing some kind of language practice: listen to a CD or tape, watch a DVD or video, read a bit, repeat, learn sentences/words by heart. Try to find someone to practice with!

How will my progress be assessed?

You and your tutor will keep your course file up to date, with a detailed checklist of your progress / points for improvement. Some of your work will be recorded, and your portfolio will now contain a little written work. You will also have assessment tests so you can measure your achievement.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

What support is available?

"Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Open Learning is available at some centres: please ask at reception offices for details.
