Spanish Advanced Stage 1    

What will the course cover?

Articles from newspapers, magazines and internet will be read and discussed. They cover current affairs, social and cultural events etc. Students will be invited to give their opinion on the choice of materials and subjects covered in the class. More complex use of register, idiom, types of Spanish worldwide.

Who is the course for?

Students who want to perfect their Spanish and gain a high standard of fluency.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

"You need to be able to understand quite well a TV or radio programme, be able to read most of a newspaper and understand and discuss issues with a degree of ease. Please see Course Information Sheets for previous levels to give you an idea. Please note: we are happy for you to try a class before you join if there is a place available. "

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

"Speak fluently in a variety of circumstances on a large range of topics. Speak and write in varying registers (formal, informal). Understand a range of spoken Spanish from all over the world. Understand radio and TV programmes (in the main). Read and understand newspaper or magazine articles. Give your opinions, persuade, argue, discuss, even joke in Spanish! "

How is the course organised?

There will be a large amount of class discussion. You will take notes and work on articles in the print media, internet material, broadcast material etc. You will work in a group with the tutor or in pairs. The class will be lively with everyone participating. We 'troubleshoot' points of grammar/usage as they arise and as you request.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Revising and learning what has been done in class with related written or oral work to prepare for the next lesson. Reading, on set topics, and more widely for your own interests. Project work will be encouraged; some independent research will be necessary. Using the media (print, broadcast, internet) to get up to date information.

How will my progress be assessed?

"In class by your contributions; written work where set. Record of your work will be kept in your Individual Learning Plan to help record the steps taken towards achieving your goals. "

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Spanish Advanced Stage 2

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

A good bilingual or monolingual dictionary. Possibly the purchase of certain key texts and reference books (eg on grammar). You will need a variety of writing materials, folders, notebooks, vocabulary books, etc. A computer will be available in the classroom to help you in your work, whether in the group or as an individual.

What support is available?

"Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available from the guide and from teaching or reception staff. "
