What will the course cover?
This course is designed to provide the opportunity to develop your drawing and painting skills by having a longer session. We will cover proportion, centre of gravity, structure, mark making, styles and approaches, use of various materials.
Who is the course for?
Anyone who would like the opportunity to draw and/or paint from a model.
What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?
Beginners are welcome as are those with experience. All will be able to progress at their own pace.
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
Make drawings and paintings of the figure from direct observation. Have basic knowledge of how the human form is structured. Interpret the basics of proportion and show this in simple drawings. Identify where the centre of gravity is in images the tutor shows you, and produce simple drawings that demonstrate this. Use a variety of drawing materials including charcoal, pen and ink, pencil to produce the work. For those who have worked with a model before will have developed their skills further taking into account the above.
How is the course organised?
Group practical drawing and painting sessions using a life model, the length of poses will vary according to the media used and other preferential factors.
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
Gallery visits are recommended. It is also beneficial to look at the work of other artists in libraries, on the web etc.
How will my progress be assessed?
One to one and group feedback sessions. Your progress will be charted by both you and the tutor using your Individual Learning Plan and Learning Journal.
What can I expect to go on to after this course?
Continue with this course to develop further. Use your work to contribute to your portfolio for application to further or higher education in art based subjects.
Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
Cartridge paper is available to use in class. Students should provide their own fixative, masking tape, sketch books and additional drawing and painting materials as necessary.
What support is available?
Learner Support Fund – a grant is available to help you pay for the cost of the course and other expenses incurred, if you are a resident in receipt of benefits. You may wish to get additional help offered through Study Support Sessions. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
