What will the course cover?

Who is the course for?
those who have studied German for about 3 terms or who have an equivalent knowledge of the language it provides the opportunity to progress in German to intermediate level

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
Give and accept invitations What to say when invited privately and on business Talk more about relationships Talk about the body: aches and illnesses Make appointments at the doctors/dentists etc. Talk about different sports and sporting events Talk about current affairs Talk about education and prepare basics for job interview leave messages/use phone, fax, e-mail & the internet get tourist/holiday information ask for info about the weather and make a forecast Grammar: modal verbs; comparatives; future tense; pronouns
How is the course organised?
use of course books, handouts, worksheets audio and videotapes 'realia' (eg real menus etc) encouragement to speak as much as possible in class work in small groups and pairs take an active part in your learning each lesson, work on the four skills: listening (and understanding), speaking, reading and writing English is used only where really necessary
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
review and learn (by heart, if possible) what has been done in class prepare for your next class (homework will be set) for best results, try hard to spend 15 minutes every day doing some kind of language practice: listen to a tape, watch a video, read a bit, repeat, learn sentences/words by heart keep a learning log if you find this useful Visit the BBC website for some interesting materials and exercises: www.bbc.co.uk/languages
How will my progress be assessed?
formative assessment: question and answer, reading/listening for comrehension some written work, quizzes, questionnaires, interviews summative assessment: formal achievement tests keep individual Course File up/Record of Progress keep a detailed portfolio of your coursework so that both you and your tutor can monitor and record your progress

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
book (Deutsch Plus 1, BBC; the accompanying tapes or CDs if possible ringbinder(s), notebooks, vocabulary book
What support is available?
help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities details are available in the prospectus or from teaching or reception staff
