What will the course cover?

If you want to illustrate books, or improve your illustration skills generally, this course is for you. Although it is advantageous to have some drawing ability, beginners are welcome. The course will cover illustrating from board-books and picture books to novels for young readers, using all media, from water colour to computer graphics. The course will be taught by Russell Coulson who has experience in all forms of illustration and design and specialises in children’s products. He has produced children’s books for publishers in this country and Australia, and worked as an illustrator/designer for Disney and Warner Bros.

Who is the course for?

This course is suitable for people who would like to learn about illustrating children’s books, or just improve their illustration skills. Beginners to advanced students are all welcome.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

"Some experience of drawing and illustration is an advantage, but beginners are also welcome. The willingness to develop and achieve own learning goals and develop your own style. "

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

"Demonstrate a knowledge of the different ways of creating children’s book illustration. Use colour media to create illustrations. Invent and draw characters, backgrounds, settings and atmosphere. Demonstrate an understanding of how to construct a ‘dummy book’, including ‘Pop up’, ‘Flap’ and ‘Board’ books. Learn to turn a story on it’s head by inventive 3 dimensional illustration and layout. Design and rough out a book and colour a drawing. Demonstrate that you have discovered and developed your own style. Build up a portfolio for presentation to publishers. For those who write their own stories, how to prepare dummy books and sample illustrations for publishers agents and illustration agents. "

How is the course organised?

Taught classes and practical sessions. Students will furthur develop their knowledge of the subject through developing their own work.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Continued practise in illustration and drawing. Reading and research of children’s books.

How will my progress be assessed?

"One to one verbal feedback, group discussion and evaluation, progress recorded on your Individual Learning Plan and Learning Journal. "

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

"Further study at more advanced level in this subject to develop technique. Portfolio Preparation courses, Foundation courses in FE/HE. Possibly publish own children’s books! "

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

"Bring pencils to the first session. You will need to bring a sketchbook (size to be advised by the tutor). Some paper is provided. Some art media are available but be advised by the tutor for best sources to purchase any other materials. "

What support is available?

"Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available from the guide and from teaching or reception staff."
