Polish Intermediate Stage 1    

What will the course cover?

Topical issues and discussions about films, plays and books. Discussions on issues in the news. Writing letters and giving information and instructions (written and orally). Exchanging news and everyday information. Developing personal ideas and opinions and evaluating information.

Who is the course for?

For those who are fairly confident in speaking, reading and writing Polish and are considering following an GCSE level Polish course. You're welcome to try a class before you enrol if you are not sure if the level is right for you.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

To be able to speak in the present, past and future ie how you spend your time; what you did when on holiday, or when you were younger, what your future plans are. Discuss news/current topics/give simple information/instructions.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Understand the written form of Polish from a variety of sources (eg newspapers/books). Communicate confidently and clearly through spoken/written Polish on topics relating to day to day matters/society, environment and the world around us. Be familiar with Polish customs and literary authors eg Senkiewicz, Prus, Mickiewicz, Zapolska.

How is the course organised?

Discussion and conversation. Role-play and presentations. Study of vocabulary and grammar related to topics. Written exercises and reading/listening activities. Study of chosen texts and related materials.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Minimum 20 minutes daily study/revision/homework. As much practice with a Polish speaker as you can manage.

How will my progress be assessed?

Tests, written exercises, reading, quizzes, course accreditation. You will keep your own Individual Learning Plan (ILP) up to date with the help of your tutor.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Polish Upper-intermediate (AS level)

What support is available?

Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available in the Guide or from teaching or Reception staff.
