What will the course cover?

We will cover some of the intermediate and advanced jewelley making techniques in set projects or in individual learning aims which include: Fusing and reticulating silver, working with silver and gold, stone settings for gypsy- and claw-, press-forming, etching, enamelling, wax carving, casting, producing all types of jewellery, attaching ready-made findings and fabricating your own if you wish.

Who is the course for?

Intermediate and Advanced learners. People planning to start their own business, individuals who are interested in working within the jewellery trade.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

This course is suitable for learners who have a good knowledge of the basic metal working techniques and the safe and confindent use of the studio and equipment.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Put into practice health & safety procedures relating to materials and equipment. Identify the use of casting. Identify the potential of wax carving and lost wax casting. Prepare a sand mould or cuttlefish bone for casting. Produce a sample of etching using resists and acid. Produce a sample of press-forming. Complete a set project or your own. Attach ready made findings or make your own Fabricate a suitable stone setting for a facetted stone Experiment with fusing or reticulating silver Use necessary tools and equipment with a degree of competence. Select and obtain materials for own project. Identify and use a range of materials for jewellery making, including findings Select tools, equipment and techniques to execute designs from idea to completion. "

How is the course organised?

There will be practical demonstrations, formal instruction, practical experience and individual tuition.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Some design work may be advised, as may some practical work such as finishing.

How will my progress be assessed?

Progress is assessed through discussing the work individually and in groups and recorded in your Individual Learning Plan and Learning Journal/ sketchbook

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Continue in the same class to increase your skills by tackling different projects. Use your work to form a portfolio for application to further or higher education courses. Apply for work with a jewellery company.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

You will be required to buy materials for jewellery making. Pencil and paper will be required on the first session. It is good practice to keep a sketchbook for design work, ideas and notes.

What support is available?

Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available in the Guide or from teaching or Reception staff.
