What will the course cover?

We will cover soldering, etching, enamelling, piercing, filing, forming, shaping, doming, wax carving, roll printing, basic hinges & joints, chain making, box making. Finishing and polishing, making findings, drawing wire, laminate inlay, forging (i.e. a taper).

Who is the course for?

Beginners and intermediate learners. The course will also benefit people who need a refresher course, or those feeling they need to go back to basics in order to progress. People planning to start their own business, individuals who are interested in working within the jewellery trade.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

None, this course is suitable for you whatever your experience as you will progress at your own pace to reach your full potential.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Put into practice health & safety procedures relating to materials and equipment. Use basic metal working techniques including sawing, filing, bending, hard soldering and annealing. Fabricate a ring. Use texturing techniques: hammering, punching and rolling mill. Drilling, piercing: using the pillar drill. Doming. Emery and polishing: using the pendant motor and polisher. Sweat soldering and soldering hollow shapes. Producing a rub over stone setting. Twisting wire. Use necessary tools and equipment with a degree of competence. Select and obtain materials for own project. Identify and use a range of materials for jewellery making, including settings and fastenings, and give examples of a range of uses for them. Select tools, equipment and techniques to execute designs from idea to completion, describing how they will be used and why.

How is the course organised?

Practical demonstrations, formal instruction, practical experience and individual tuition.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Visits to museums and craft galleries would be useful. Some design work may be advised, as may some practical work such as finishing. .

How will my progress be assessed?

Progress is assessed through discussing the work individually and in groups and recorded in your Individual Learning Plan and Learning Journal.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Higher level or accredited jewellery course with us. Further or higher education courses. Apply for work with a jewellery company.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

You will be required to buy materials for jewellery making. Pencil and paper will be required on the first session. It is good practice to keep a sketchbook for design work, ideas and notes.

What support is available?

Learner Support Fund – a grant is available to help you pay for the cost of the course and other expenses incurred, if you are a resident in receipt of benefits. You may wish to get additional help offered through Study Support Sessions. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
