What will the course cover?

You will be introduced to the use of your camera, and begin to look at techniques including exposure, depth of field, lenses, films and filters in this practical course. Learners will be introduced to photographic issues and trends.

Who is the course for?

Beginners who would like to learn basic camera skills, and what it is involved in producing good photographs.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

Minimal skills in photography, enthusiasm, you will need to bring your own SLR camera.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

"Recognise and identify the functions and controls on a camera. Name the different types of lenses and how and when to use them. Demonstrate an understanding of the meaning and use of ISO. Demonstrate an ability to take photographs of a variety of subjects in the home or on location. Begin to develop the ability to critically evaluate photographs. "

How is the course organised?

In the classroom - Whole class work/ group work. Individual and group work on outside shoots. Lectures with images and or dvd.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

"Practice taking photos to help understand the techniques. Project work. Visit photographic exhibitions. Read photography books to build up a workbook. "

How will my progress be assessed?

Continual assessment through the use of your Individual Learning Plan and Learning Journal.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

"Begin to build a portfolio to use for possible entry to higher level course. "

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

Film and processing and colour enlarging costs.

What support is available?

"Learner Support Fund – a grant is available to help you pay for the cost of the course and other expenses incurred, if you are a resident in receipt of benefits. You may wish to get additional help offered through Study Support Sessions. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities."
