What will the course cover?
You will be introduced to using a camera and what the manual controls can help you achieve. Also lots of tips on how to take successful pictures, what makes a good composition so that you can record your world in pictures.
Who is the course for?
Beginners who would like to learn basic camera skills, and what it is involved in producing good photographs.
What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?
None, only an enthusiasm to begin taking successful photographs.
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
Recognise and identify the functions and controls on a camera. Name the different type of film/media and how and when to use them. Demonstrate an understanding of how the use of films and camera settings with different speeds can effect the quality of photographs. Demonstrate an ability to take photographs of a variety of subjects in the home or on location. Begin to develop the ability to evaluate photographs
How is the course organised?
Practical classroom sessions. Talks with slides and examples. Taking photographs for homework or during sessions and critically analysing them afterwards.
What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?
Practice taking photos to help understand the techniques. Project work. Visit photographic exhibitions and look at books on photography.
How will my progress be assessed?
Feedback from tutor and recorded on your Individual Learning Plan.
What can I expect to go on to after this course?
Begin to build a portfolio to use for possible entry to higher level course.
Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
A digital or traditional camera. Film and or processing if required. You can also bring your pictures in on a disk or memory stick.
What support is available?
"Learner Support Fund – a grant is available to help you pay for the cost of the course and other expenses incurred, if you are a resident in receipt of benefits. You may wish to get additional help offered through Study Support Sessions. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities."
