What will the course cover?
Suitable for those new to pottery or with more experience you will be encouraged to develop at your own pace. There will be demonstrations each week that will cover a range of techniques including: coiling, pinching, slabbing and press moulding also decorative finishes and glazing.
Who is the course for?
This is a mixed ability class, beginners are welcome and those with some or more experience will be encouraged to develop their skills by trying out new techniques
What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?
No previous experience necessary but for those who are continuing you will have a working knowledge of the following forming techniques: Pinching/coiling/slabbing/moulding, basic glazing techniques,slipping,use of tools and equipment are beneficial.
What should I be able to do by the end of the course?
Identify storage and maintainence requirements. Identify the properties of clay. Demostrate handbuilding techniques. Work confidently in coiling, pinching, slabbing, and press moulding. Be able to apply 3 types of surface decoration. Make work using your own designs. Plan and work independently. Use a journal/ sketchbook. Record and develop own design from a range of sources. Identify stages required to achieve finished design. .
How is the course organised?
Demonstrations of a range of advanced techniques. Individual practical activity. Individual guidance. Group and individual discussion.

How will my progress be assessed?
Progress is assessed through discussing the work individually and in groups and recorded on your own Individual Learning Plan and Learning Journal.
What can I expect to go on to after this course?
Continue this course to develop your skills further or move on to higher level courses within Adult Education or beyond in Further or HE. Please ask your tutor for advise
Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?
Clay is charged by the pound. Optional additional costs re specialist materials.
What support is available?
Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available in the Guide or from teaching or Reception staff.
