What will the course cover?

The course covers the skills/techniques and materials used in picture framing, including the cutting of mouldings, card mounts and glass cutting.

Who is the course for?

Learners who wish to learn picture frame making and apply decorative finishes including gilding, together with all the allied processes and who are seeking an introduction to the presentation and care of works of art.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

Everybody welcome, from complete beginners to more advanced. No previous experience required.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Demonstrate the ability to apply Health and Safety procedures in a workshop. Purchase mouldings (correct amount to frame a picture). Saw and guillotine moulding to produce a mitre joint. Assemble a frame and secure its backing. Be able to identify a range of decorative finishes to choose from. Cut a mount (double & triple mounting), and wash line and decorate it. Frame non-flat items (box & floating frames)

How is the course organised?

Practical workshop sessions and demonstrations, backed by talks/lectures. One to one discussions with the tutor. Question and answer sessions.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Learners are expected to support their studies with visitsd to museums, art galleries, exhibitions etc. Reading books,catalogues and magazines etc.

How will my progress be assessed?

Progress is assessed through discussing the work individually and in groups and also recorded on your Individual Learning Plans and Learning Journals.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Continue to attend the class to further your skills or higher level courses with other providers. If your work is of a good standard you may obtain work within the trade.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

You will need to provide the following personal equipment/materials after the 1st class: 1. Mouldings (enough for 2 or 3 project to start with) 2. Mount card 3. Picture glass (usually 2mm thick) 4. Backing board (either hard board or 2mm MDF) 5. Masking tape and flat brush (both half inch)

What support is available?

Help with literacy and numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available in the Guide or from teaching or Reception staff.
