What will the course cover?

The course covers the skills/techniques and materials used in picture framing, including the cutting of mouldings, card mounts, studies of colouring and decorative finishes. You will also get a grounding in the different ways of displaying and care of art works.

Who is the course for?

Students who wish to learn picture frame making and gilding together with all the allied processes and who are seeking an introduction to the presentation and care of works of art.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

No previous experience required.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Demonstrate the ability to apply Health and Safety procedures in a workshop. Seal the glass and backing on a frame. Identify 3 acid free products used in picture framing. Identify 5 pieces equipment used in framing. Identify 5 moulding types. Identify 3 frame assembly techniques. Identify 2 adhesive types. Secure artwork to card mounts. Accurately mark and cut angled mount cuts. Create plaster casts of moulding. Describe 2 techniques to care for artwork correctly. Cut accurate mitres. Mark and cut glass accurately and safely. Apply 3 wood finishing techniques to picture frames. Produce written costings for a picture frame. Describe 2 basic design principles and relate them to framing. Identify 3 COSHH regulations. Evaluate projects undertaken.

How is the course organised?

"Practical workshop sessions and demonstrations, backed by talks/lectures. One to one discussions with the tutor. Question and answer sessions. "

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

"Students are expected to support their studies with visitsd to museums, art galleries, exhibitions etc. Reading books,catalogues and magazines etc. "

How will my progress be assessed?

Progress is assessed through discussing the work individually and in groups and also recorded on your Individual Learning Plans and Learning Journals.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Higher level courses with other providers. If your work is of a good standard you may obtain work within the trade.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

"The student will need to provide the following personal equipment/materials: Clear ruler, set square, pencil, ruling pen. Notebook, pen and folder. Small pictures (max 15cm by 25 cm). Specialist materials to be advised by the tutor. Older clothes, overals if desired. Stout shoes. "

What support is available?

"Learner Support Fund – a grant is available to help you pay for the cost of the course and other expenses incurred, if you are a resident in receipt of benefits. You may wish to get additional help offered through Study Support Sessions. Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities."
