What will the course cover?

This course is designed to introduce you to ceramic sculptural techniques.

Who is the course for?

For beginners or experienced artists who wish to develop their skills using clay to make contemporary ceramic sculpture.

For beginners or experienced artists who wish to develop their skills using clay to make contemporary ceramic sculpture.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

• Drawing from observation, you will develop individual ideas/themes from a still life set up that you will develop into three-dimensional forms using the visual elements of line, texture, colour and shape to construct abstract forms. • Develop making techniques combining soft clay and leather hard clay experimenting with form and creating interesting glazed surfaces through the use of multiple firings. • Experiment with materials by combining mixed media techniques using paper clay and wire. • You will develop an awareness of historical and contemporary approaches in ceramics through learning about ceramic artists and techniques.

How is the course organised?

Demonstrations of a range of advanced techniques. Individual practical activity. Individual guidance. Group and individual discussion.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

To get the most from this course you are advised to research information for projects and to keep notes and sketches to support your 3D work. The use of a smart phone or similar to record work in progress would be beneficial.

How will my progress be assessed?

Progress is assessed through discussing the work individually and in groups and recorded in your own Individual Learning Plan and Learning Journal.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Continue pottery courses with us to develop your skills further or move on to a higher level course e.g. an art foundation course. Please ask your tutor for advice. All learners will have the opportunity to showcase work made in an end of year exhibition.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

An apron or ‘workshop’ clothes, Sketch-book and drawing materials. Brushes and clay tools, plastic bags. Clay is charged per pound of clay to cover materials and firing costs.

What support is available?

Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
