On this course you will improve on the skills gained in the Beginners ballet course. The course will focus on developing knowledge of ballet technique and broadening the participants knowledge-base of ballet steps. The course will help to develop the learner’s ability to perform ballet steps and sequences accurately.
People who have completed the Beginners ballet course, or have recently attended a beginners ballet course elsewhere. This class is also for those who may be returning to ballet after a long time.
An understanding of basic ballet technique – posture, use of turnout, foot-work, how to use the arms. Knowledge of basic ballet steps and terminology such as; demi-plié, battement tendu, battement glissé and ports de bras. Knowledge of the five positions of the legs and the arms.
Gain a sound understanding of the principles of ballet technique and demonstrate the following physical skills for the majority of the exercises/sequences: good posture, correct use of turnout taking into account your range of rotation and strength, accurate and articulate use of feet, accurate shape and placing of the arms. Demonstrate the physical skills of balance, control and co-ordination. Barre work – Perform a full barre at a basic level. Perform a simple adage – exercises in the centre that involve slow, sustained lyrical movements, and include balances and ports de bras. Turns – Accurately demonstrate the action and co-ordination for preparation for pirouettes & posé turns. Attempt a turn on at least one side. Petit allegro – Perform small jumps with correct use of demi-plié and the feet. Memorise and perform a combination of steps of minimum 1 minute in duration. Correctly identify the names of the ballet steps covered. Dance in time with the music and demonstrate an awareness of how to dance with a sense of musicality, performance and expression.
A weekly class that focuses on learning, repeating and improving the ballet exercises taught in class. Class will start at the ballet barre and progress into the centre.
Remember the exercises and sequences from week to week. Try to retain and remember any feedback.
Tutor observation with verbal feedback in class, and written feedback in your Learning Journal. Each learner will have their own Learning Journal and Individual Learning Plan in which they make notes and reflections to help chart their progress.
Once you have a sound understanding of ballet technique, and have a good knowledge of the steps covered in the course you will be able to move to Level 2. In order to learn a broad range of ballet steps and gain the strength and control required for Level 2 many people stay in Level 1 for more than one term.
Footwear - Ballet shoes with elastic or ribbons. Or jazz shoes if you don’t have ballet shoes (not jazz boots or jazz trainers though). Clothes - Leotard, vest top or t-shirt. Leggings, tights or dance/sports trousers or shorts. Hair must be tied back if long. Please remove loose jewellery such as necklaces, earrings (studs are allowed) and bracelets. Bring a plastic bottle of water or similar.
Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
