Speaking, Listening and Reading and some Writing at entry level 1 and 2. The scheme of work will be based on topics, functions, grammar and vocabulary related to work, education, training and everyday life all taught in a citizenship context and will include social and cultural awareness. Some learners will be prepared for trinity Skills for Life ESOL Reading exams at Entry 1 and 2.
This course supports learners as they take their first steps in learning English and provides an introduction to ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages).
No formal skills or knowledge is required to do this course. You will be given a short diagnostic assessment by the tutor during induction.
• Understand questions asking for personal details and respond accordingly, e.g. What’s your name? Where are you from? Do you have children?. • Produce sentences using present simple tense first and third person singular • Talk about a recent past event e.g Past weekend using correct form of the verb on 3 occasions • To ask questions to obtain specific information at least 5 times using past tense and present tense
The course runs for 12 weeks. A combination of whole class teaching, group and pair work. Methods include role-plays, drills, listening literacy, grammar exercises, form filling, games, comprehension exercises and tests.
Learners are expected to complete their homework and revise the lessons.
Individual learning targets will be agreed and reviewed collaboratively during one to one tutorials . There will be close tutor monitoring and a range of comprehension exercises such as gap fill and matching exercises and tests.
A higher level ESOL class, Family Learning classes.
This course is free. All the resources will be provided.
Regular tutorials with class tutors. The Programme Leader is available throughout the year for additional support and guidance. Students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities may be able to receive additional support at some centres; details are available from Reception staff
