What will the course cover?

Discover the secrets of Thai cooking with this one day course. The trick is to combine fresh ingredients with special blends of herbs to create fragrant Thai cuisine. This course will cover an understanding of Thai cookery; students will explore and discover very 4 authentic Thai recipes with genuine Thai spices, ingredients and herbs. A step by step guide will be provided to cook tasty and authentic Thai recipes. Thai recipes can easily be adapted for vegetarians, people on gluten free or low-salt diets or those buying halal or kosher. With this fantastic course, you'll be shown how to use these ingredients to make a selection of popular Thai dishes. In this One day class, you'll get to make a mouthwatering selection of exotic dishes; such as the ever popular Thai Green Curry, Jasmine Rice, Fish Cakes and famous Tom Yam Soup.

Who is the course for?

This course is open to everyone with a desire to cook and prepare genuine tasty Thai meals at home. It's ideal for people who enjoy cooking, entertaining and appreciate good food! New recipes covered so if you have attended before you can still learn more.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

No particular skills are required over and above a reasonable understanding of cooking techniques, ability to follow a recipe and a willingness and enthusiasm to develop your own skills. It is for beginners and experienced people wishing to broaden their appetite for Thai cookery.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Prepare, cook and present 4 Thai dishes (1 starter, 1Thai rice dish, 1 soup dish and 1 main dish) with flair and confidence.

How is the course organised?

You will be able to prepare and cook 4 dishes. Before the practical lesson the tutor will explain about the background of Thai cuisine and recipes as well as about the Thai cooking techniques, spices, herbs and other ingredients. Most of the practical lessons in the classroom will be demonstrated by the tutor before learners will participate to prepare and cook the food. A recipe sheet will be provided to enable you to try out the dishes at home.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Outside the classroom, it will be up to you to develop the skills and knowledge you have been taught. Practicing at home really helps to build confidence.

How will my progress be assessed?

Produced recipes by students will be assessed by the tutor. Tutor observation and monitoring by going round while learners will be experimenting with the recipes and classroom discussion. Question and answer strategies will also be used in order to test learners cooking knowledge and skills. Your feedback and progress will be recorded in your Individual Learning Plan.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

After this course you will be able to experiment with spices to make your own unique meals with confidence using learnt skills. Further skills and broaden your cooking knowledge, experience and skills by joining another course within our curriculum, in order to develop your culinary skills.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

The tutor will give a list of ingredients to learners to bring for the lesson. PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU RECEIVE THIS. Basic seasonings, oils and other basic ingredients will be provided. Learners should provide their own apron and containers to take your completed dishes home. It is recommended that comfortable clothing is worn as well as sensible footwear due to the practical nature of the class.

What support is available?

Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available in the Guide or from teaching or Reception staff. Your Tutor Poppy Dey is a qualified lecturer, who has a wealth of experience in teaching authentic Asian cuisine in the UK. She has widely travelled Far East countries to gather fresh inspiration for her passion for oriental food e.g. Thailand, China, Japan, Malaysia. Singapore, Hong Kong and has an experience of cooking skills of these cuisines.
