What will the course cover?

This award provides the learner with practical skills and knowledge needed to decorate small cakes with sugar paste. You will develop basic practical skills, using a range of materials, techniques and equipment in the designing, planning, preparation, decoration and presentation of a collection of mini-cakes.

Who is the course for?

Learners who wish to increase their skills in the subject for employment and/or personal development.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

None but an interest in the subject and a willingness to learn. You will need to record your work in photographs and write out simple costings and other related information so you will need to be able to write in English at Entry 3 or above level.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

"Be able to work safely and effectively using tools, equipment and materials Identify health and safety regulations relating to working with sugarpaste. List tools, equipment and materials used to work with sugarpaste. Use tools, equipment and materials safely when working with sugarpaste. Know the characteristics of materials required to decorate mini cakes with sugarpaste. Identify the ingredients required to make creams List the characteristics of commercial materials used to decorate cakes. • sugarpastes • marzipans • jams • creams List storage requirements for sugarpaste. Be able to research and produce design ideas for sugarpasted mini cakes. Research design ideas for cakes decorated with sugarpaste Use design materials to sketch own design ideas for sugarpasted mini cakes to show the use of: • Colour • Line • Texture Be able to sample materials, techniques and processes for decorating mini cakes with sugarpaste. Select materials for a chosen design Prepare materials for decorating mini cakes with sugarpaste Use materials to sample techniques and processes List techniques and processes used to make sugarpaste samples. Estimate the time required and cost to decorate mini cakes with sugarpaste. Be able to decorate mini cakes with sugarpaste. Develop a statement of intent Decorate mini cakes with sugarpaste to a selected design. Finish decorated mini cakes. Present finished decorated mini cakes following a design specification. Produce a cost sheet. Produce production timescales. Evaluate completed sugarpasted mini cakes.

How is the course organised?

Demonstrations, group work, practical and project work. Class instruction and one to one tuition. There will also be tutorials.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

There will be homework set to support your learning and to ensure a successful outcome.

How will my progress be assessed?

Your progress will be assessed by using your individual Learning Plan (ILP) and folder. Your work will be assessed and marked by your tutor and will be sampled by internal and external verifiers. Questions and answer sessions. Photographs taken as you progress.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

Begin to work in the business or for yourself or take further courses at this level or higher level 2 course with us or a FE college (tutor can advise).

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

Your tutor will advise learners about the “tools of the trade” you will be advised each week of what you need to bring. some materials and equipment will be provided. You will need to bring an A4 ring-binder with plastic sleeves.

What support is available?

Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities.
