What will the course cover?

To introduce significant periods and movements in art and present in context the various museums and collections of London. The learners will be able to recognise famous paintings, learn about ideas and movements and discover the works of major artists. We will discuss movements and periods including Renaissance, Romanticism and Impressionism and showcase each period through key artworks and artists. The learners will then have the chance to visit and see the examined works in London’s museums and galleries.

Who is the course for?

Learners of all levels are welcome, no prior knowledge on the topic is needed. Reading will not be essential as resources will mainly be visual.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

Prior knowledge is not necessary A general idea/interest in art

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Identify major art periods and movements Recognise famous works and artists Understand the creative and historical development of art Get inspired for their own practice Understand the reasons behind the creation of certain art movements, looking into personal and historical details Gain a sound knowledge of London’s art world, Museums and galleries

How is the course organised?

Auditory - Presentation by the tutor, questions and discussion in the classroom Visual - Power point presentation and videos Read/Write - Short articles and suggested bibliography, other digital sources Hands On - Where possible and relevant, learners can experiment with art techniques

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Visits suggested will be to public Museums (free of charge).

How will my progress be assessed?

No formal assessment, however activities will be given to learners to encourage further exploration and understanding of art history, as a conversation starting point in the classroom or as a follow up activity for those interested.
