What will the course cover?

This course consisting of eleven weekly sessions will explore the growth and development of London from Edwardian times to the Dawn of the 21st Century. Session 1 24/04/20 Introduction & London 1900-1939 (Part 1) Edwardian London (1901-1910). Session 2 01/05/20 London 1900-1939 (Part 2) London and World War One. Session 3 08/05/20 London 1900-1939 (Part 3) London and the Roaring Twenties (1920-1929). Session 4 15/05/20 London 1900-1939 (Part 4) Growth of London between the Two World Wars. Session 5 22/05/20 London in WW2 (Part 1) London and the Outbreak of the Second World War. Session 6 05/06/20 London in WW2 (Part 2) London During The Blitz. Session 7 12/06/20 London in WW2 (Part 3) Working Together, Life in London During the Second World War. Session 8 19/06/20 London in WW2 (Part 4) End of World War 2, Victory and Celebration in London. Session 9 26/06/20 Modern London 1945-1990 (Part 1) Post War London (1945-1959). Session 10 03/07/20 Modern London 1945-1990 (Part 2) Swinging London & Beyond (1960-1979). Session 11 10/07/20 Modern London 1945-1990 (Part 3) Thatcher's London (1979-1990).

Who is the course for?

Anyone interested in learning more about London's history from ancient times to the present.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

None but your English should be good enough to be able to follow the lectures, participate in class discussions and do some background reading

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Have a much more detailed knowledge of the development of London's history in the last century

How is the course organised?

11 two-hour long sessions with each one focusing on a particular aspect of London's history (from political developments to social and cultural aspects). Towards the end of the course the tutor and students will discuss the possibility of a London tour to see first hand some of the sites covered during the sessions.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Some reading is recommended but it is not a requirement.
