What will the course cover?

This course consisting of eleven weekly sessions will explore the origins, growth and development of London from Roman to Medieval times. Session 1 20/09/19 Introduction & Roman London (Part 1) Roman Invasion & Conquest (43 AD+). Session 2 27/09/19 Roman London (Part 2) Origins and Growth of Roman London (50 AD+). Session 3 04/10/19 Roman London (Part 3) Life in Roman London. Session 4 11/10/19 Anglo Saxon London (Part 1) Arrival of the Anglo Saxons. Session 5 18/10/19 Anglo Saxon London (Part 2) Origins and Growth of Lundenwic. Session 6 01/11/19 Anglo Saxon London (Part 3) Life in Anglo Saxon London. Session 7 08/11/19 Norman London (Part 1) Norman Invasion & Conquest (1066 AD). Session 8 15/11/19 Norman London (Part 2) Royal London and Emergence of Westminster. Who is the course for?

Anyone interested in learning more about London's history from ancient times to the present.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

None but your English should be good enough to be able to follow the lectures, participate in class discussions and do some background reading.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Have a much more detailed knowledge of the development of London's history from Roman to Medieval times.

How is the course organised?

11 two-hour long sessions with each one focusing on a particular aspect of London's history (from political developments to social and cultural aspects). Towards the end of the course the tutor and students will discuss the possibility of a London tour to see first hand some of the sites covered during the sessions.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Some reading is recommended but it is not a requirement.

By your contribution in class.

What can I expect to go on to after this course?

The next course: from Tudor to Victorian times. Tutor will advise.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

No other costs. A notebook and a pen to write down notes.
