You must be a native speaker of the language you translate into and have a high level of linguistic competence of the source language You must have a genuine interest or knowledge of translation and of the field of semi-specialization you want to choose for the exam
To attend the exam with the theoretical and practical training required To produce translation following the professional standards To be aware of the basics of translation theory and procedures and how to apply them To have a sound knowledge of translation and be confident in your chosen specialization fields To understand and follow the professional code of conduct To be familiar with the translation industry and the professional market
Following the 3 units of the DipTrans Exam format, the course is divided into 3 modules of 6 weeks each, complemented by tutorial sessions to enhance your learning. Module 1 Introduction to Translation Theory & Application to General Text Translation Module 2 Translation Theory Applied, Introduction to Semi Specialised Texts: Technology, Literature and Business. Translation Practice with IOL Exam Papers Module 3 Translation Theory Applied, Introduction to Semi Specialised Texts: Science, Social Science and Law. Translation Practice with IOL Exam Papers
8 to 10 hours of individual guided study and translation practice at home are required during the teaching weeks
Weekly tutor´s constructive feedback on student progress Peer review and exercises to increase translation performance and keep motivation With homework With three formative assessments based on the IOL past papers to evaluate progress and also raise self confidence of the student to sit the exam One individual tutorial session is available to each student at the end of each module.

You will need: Computer and internet access A good dictionary of your language combination A note book and pens - Specialised dictionary may be required in your field of specialised translation
You tutor will give you constant support throughout the course and can always be contacted via email outside teaching hours Extra work and information for those who wish to learn more is always available from the tutor as well The language department at Macbeth centre also offers support through out the course duration Numerous courses are also available at Macbeth if the student needs to improve in a specific field required for the exam (i.e. English grammar, Business studies, Humanities, etc.)
