What will the course cover?

Review of all structures covered in the first year syllabus, plus more on adjectives, pronouns (direct & indirect object), plural, more prepositions, some more irregular past tenses. Topics will include parts of the body, personal characteristics and types of clothes, Understanding and responding fairly simply to people's opinions; offer help, advice.

Who is the course for?

Students who want to improve their basic Portuguese in order to converse when travelling in a Portuguese-speaking country, for work or with Portuguese-speaking friends, and who also wish to improve their reading and writing skills.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

Please see Choosing Your Course section in the Guide, or ask for Course Information Sheets for Portuguese Beginners Stages 1-3 for full details of grammar and topics you should know. If there are places on the course, you're welcome to sit in and try it before joining. This is advisable in Terms 2 & 3 particularly. We want you to feel comfortable, and find the right level for you!

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

You will be able to : • Describe people and clothes • Talk about heath and parts of the body; • Explain you’ll be late and apologize • Ask and give opinion about an subject • Explain where you used to live and use the past • Exchange opinions, compare likes and dislikes with someone. • Learn the language you need for travel, holidays, sport, spending your free time.

How is the course organised?

We use course books, handouts, worksheets; audio and videos. You will be encouraged to speak as much as possible in class, to work in small groups and pairs, to take an active part in your learning; and each lesson, to work on the four skills: listening (and understanding), speaking, reading and writing. Use of English is kept to an absolute minimum.

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Reviewing and learning (by heart, if possible) what has been done in the class. Preparing for your next class (homework will be set). For best results, try hard to spend 15 minutes every day doing some kind of language practice: listen to a tape, watch a video, read a bit, repeat, learn sentences/words by heart

How will my progress be assessed?

Every lesson you are given different tasks so that progress can be assessed. Record of your work will be kept in your Individual Learning Plan to help record the steps taken towards achieving your goals.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

Coursebook: to be decided. CHECK WITH TUTOR BEFORE BUYING! Ring binder & A4 paper, notebooks and vocabulary book (tutor will advise).

What support is available?

Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and he ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Details are available in the Guide or from teaching or Reception staff.
