What will the course cover?

We will focus on practice of previously learned language plus: • places in the neighbourhood, directions and locations • renting accommodation • types of transport • holiday activities, talk about something you like and dislikes • types of sports • We learn more on grammar and work more on reading and writing.

Who is the course for?

Students who have completed beginners’ stage 1, 2 and 3, or who have an equivalent knowledge. If unsure, ask the curriculum manager. You may be able to try a class before enrolling, if the tutor agrees.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

You need to know the Pinyin system and understand and express greetings; introductions and personal information; cope with numbers; express time and date; use of some simple measuring words; express things that you like or don’t like; Some very basic notions of grammar and structure, as well as a few basic characters.

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

Express yourself on all the topics at beginners level plus: • identify locations and directions of places, can ask for and give directions • understand an advertisement for a flat, can make an appointment to see the flat. • make your own travel plans by choosing some public transport • talk about something you like or dislike to do in the holiday • talk about sports and favourite player • understand a blog about sports

How is the course organised?

Communicative exercises based on the material in the course book, and other material which the tutor will provide. You will be asked to repeat phrases, build up conversational exchanges, work in pairs and take a very active part in activities. We will use audio and video to help you learn

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Your tutor will ask you to preview each lesson beforehand. This will help you enjoy each lesson. Work as much as you can with the course online. See if you can find a friend to practise with. Please make the effort to do a little (even 10 – 15 minutes) each day, as that is the best way of learning a language.

How will my progress be assessed?

You will be encouraged to assess your own progress with help from your tutor, who will monitor your achievements by question and answer, some written work, quizzes, questionnaires, games and more formal achievement tests. Record of your work will be kept in your Individual Learning Plan to help record the steps taken towards achieving your goals.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

Writing materials; A4 ring binder and loose-leaf paper; a notebook for vocabulary. The course book is Discover China Volume I, published by Macmillan, and is provided by the school. What support is available?

Help with literacy or numeracy is available through the basic education programme and the ESOL programme offers help for speakers of other languages.
