What will the course cover?

The course will start with a review of topics covered at lower level (Japanese for busy people Volume I and half of Volume II) before moving on to intermediate level grammar (Japanese for busy people Volume III). All skills will be covered and students will learn 3 / 4 new characters each week and will be introduced to different aspects of Japanese culture and society.

Who is the course for?

It’s ideal for anyone wishing to move beyond basic Japanese and wanting to start interacting with Japanese speakers in a variety of settings (travelling in Japan, talking about Japanese culture etc). Learners will be encouraged to take the exam JLPT N5 in December 2016 and, if they wish, LJPT N4 in July 2017.

What skills, knowledge or experience do I need to start this course?

You should already be able to: ·read and write hiragana and katakana ·understand basic grammar (-masu form, comparisons, talking about the past etc.) ·recognise around 100 kanji (numbers, days of the week, basic verbs etc.)

What should I be able to do by the end of the course?

·communicate confidently with Japanese speakers in a variety of daily situations ·travel in Japan on your own ·hold a simple conversation on the phone ·write a simple letter

How is the course organised?

3 terms of 11 weeks each. Each lesson is 2-hours long and will comprise a mixture of activities: JLPT exam practice conversation Learning 3/4 kanji every week Introduction to a different aspect of Japanese culture

What extra study or practice is expected outside of the class?

Homework (work sheet) is set every week and learners are strongly encouraged to spend at least 40 minutes to 1 hour reviewing and practising at home.

How will my progress be assessed?

We provide assessments (initial and mid-term assessment) twice each term.

Are there any other costs and what do I need to bring?

The textbook is: Japanese for busy people Volume 3 (the tutor will provide copies of the last cahpters of Volume II). Please wait till the first lesson before buying anything as the tutor will discuss the different options in class.

What support is available?

All course materials will be available on Google-drive for reference (especially for those who have missed a lesson). Individual mini-tutorials may be arranged by the tutor as and when necessary to help learners catch up with the rest of the group. For any additional requests or needs please ask at reception when enrolling.
