We revise and develop knowledge and use of language structures and vocabulary covered in the first 3 levels: all verb tenses; more refined use of nouns, adjectives, adverbs, expressions of time and place. The aim is to foster confident self-expression, broaden your choice of linguistic strategies, and deepen your knowledge of the Hispanic countries, their history, culture and current situations, using a variety of authentic source materials. Exam classes will follow the AS syllabus.
Students with an intermediate level of Spanish (approx GCSE level) who wish to become more fluent in speaking and widen their knowledge of the Spanish-speaking world. Also for those who wish to take an AS level exam. For details of the syllabus go to www.edexcel.org.uk and find the Spanish AS specification.
GCSE or equivalent. See Guide for information; and for full details, request the Course Information sheet for level 2.2.
"• Hold a conversation with a range of native speakers in a variety of registers on topics of common interest • exchange views and opinions of news and current affairs, cultural matters, personal matters, practical matters • understand broadcast and print media, films, theatre • get and use source material from the internet • write adequately for your purposes, using a dictionary and other reference sources correctly. "
The approach is communicative, I.e you are encouraged to participate actively in class discussions & presentations via a range of learning activities, eg listening comprehension with related written work, reading (eg current newspaper articles), using TV and internet material, role plays and simulation exercises. Grammar is revised as the need arises, and more subtle uses of language are taught. Your contribution is a very valuable part of the course and is encouraged, in a supportive atmosphere. We will use no English unless really necessary!
"Revising and learning what has been done in class with related written or oral work to prepare for the next lesson. Reading, on set topics, and more widely for your own interests. Project work will be encouraged; some independent research will be necessary. Using the media (print, broadcast, internet) to get up to date information. "
Both tutor and students keep a closely detailed record of work accomplished and student performance against agreed criteria. These will be based on the AS level syllabus. Your oral and written contributions are assessed continuously, in class and via home assignments.
